Summer Training - #dgplug - End of Day 2

June 30th, 2008

After a bit wait it was 7.00 pm IST and time for the sessions again. Today it was Kushal’s turn to complete the rest left lectures on Vi. I got a blow from my very own BSNL Broadband when it suddenly disconnected from the Interent and then refused to connect to it again. :) [ BSNL has these very good feature when the weather seems bit bad the Broadband gets down ]. Neways from the morning I was reading the ‘vimtutor’ thus didn’t worry too much for Kushal’s lecture. [ I also got the summer training logs as handy ]. After that I thought there’s no other way I could connect to internet than to use a proxy to my friend’s wireless connection who lives in the other room [From that time I am in proxy only ] :P .

At approximately 10.45 p.m IST around Prasad [ _pjp_ is his irc nick ] started the session on using gcc compiler for compiling C programs. The session was fine but may be Prasad would have been mad by the end of the session as the World’s weirdest questions were asked to him today. :) He was fired from every possible angles with questions that can be so lame as a guy/girl seeing computer the first day can ask. :p [ Even there were persons who were mistaking to write ' float main(void) ' in the C program --- Seeing which I fell off the chair ]. Ne ways with such strangest doubts along, we couldn’t move far deep in to gcc, but all in all the session was interactive and good.

Due to all the timing problems Rishi’s class started much later after 45 mins than normal time at 12:45 am IST. As usual Rishi blasted off the start as he answers all the questions in the beginning only, which can come to the student’s mind later :P I loved Rishi’s class again, got to learn much about symbolic links and all with a firing problem to end the session by Kushal. The problem is under the scanner of all, but we had to quit the session since the clock didn’t permit us long. The time was approximately 3.00 am IST when we ended the session.

This was the end of Day 2 with good responses from large no of students. Today it was day of Weirdest Questions , Smartest Answers , Frustrated Teachers and Enthusiastic Students [ Who asked English Meanings in a 'SHELL' session ] .

I sign off as it is 4.00 am IST now and tommorow with more greatness I have office at 7.00 am IST. I don’t know how to wake up, let GOD help.. :)

Summer training - Day 2 - #dgplug

June 29th, 2008

Though classes not yet started , I needed something to write. Slept late at night after writing the blog post. From morning started studying may be a effect of night carried on :) . Trying to make my Hackergotchi soon after getting a excellent tutorial in the fedora wiki. From morning (late at 11.00 am ) started to study ‘vimtutor’ which helped me to learn lot about vim. Created my .vimrc file and soon going to implement it after today’s session of Kushal on vim. Downloaded Istanbul now, trying some layman’s screencasts, so that I can create my own soon.

Looking ahead for Day 2 @ #dgplug

Summer Training - #dgplug - day 1

June 29th, 2008

Overwhelmed by the response to the summer training at #dgplug . I was really elated to see certainly the channel has around 39 members active and everybody taking part in the discussion. After I came from office drenched in rain, didn’t even think of changing and just was in front of my laptop. Just want to thank Debarshi as for a excellent session in the first half.

Thanks Kushal for the 2nd half brief introduction to Vi, liked that too. All in all today was a great start to the summer training and hopefully will continue so. :)

A Great Day

June 22nd, 2008

I installed F9 on my box on the 2nd day of its release. All was fine and I was happy using the new F. I use a ACER 4520 lappy. There was 3 major problems i faced till yesterday, and all of them got solved yesterday only :)

1) Configuring my Atheros wifi card

Go to the path /etc/yum.repos.d and in that open livna-testing.repo (you should have livna installed in your box before) [madwifi drivers for f9 is still not available in livna repository]

vi livna-testing.repo

The first enabled string you notice there make it equal to 1

Save and exit the file

Run the command

su -c "yum install madwifi kmod-madwifi"

After this two gets installed you add the following lines of code to /etc/modprobe.conf as root

## Start Atheros Stuff
alias wifi0 ath_pci
alias ath0 ath_pci
options ath_pci autocreate=sta
## End Atheros Stuff

After you are done with reboot your box

su -c "system-config-network"

to manually configure it. (Though it should be already done after reboot)

Happy wifing ….. :) [Just make the enabled string of livna-testing.repo as 0 after configuring the wifi card]

2) Configuring my Nvidia GeForce 7000m in F9

It was lot more easier the earlier one

just run the command

su -c 'yum install kmod-nvidia'

Restart the X-server

Then hooray you  are done with the configuration of Graphics card. Njoy !!

3) Tapping working in my lappy’s touchpad

Download  the latest Synaptics driver from

Download from here

Install the rpm package by

su -c 'rpm-Uvh synaptics-0.14.6-8.1.fc9.i386.rpm'

Reboot the box after installing….Hooray again…tapping works..!!
